Tetragon is betting big on the gas Asia still needs

An 8 TCF target puts Tetragon firmly in big-game territory...

Tetragon Energy (ASX:TET) is busy advancing two offshore Philippines permits following its recent listing, including SC-80 where the Halcon prospect carries an 8 TCF 2U gross prospective gas resource. The permit also hosts 470 Bcf of gross 2C contingent gas resources across existing discoveries.

Halcon is the headline

Halcon is the standout.

The prospect is defined on 3D seismic and carries a 2U estimate of 8 TCF gross, with a low case of 1.7 TCF and a high case of 22.6 TCF.

That is the kind of scale that gets attention.

However prospective resources are still undiscovered, and Halcon now needs drilling to prove whether the gas is really there.

Find it early, bring in a major

Tetragon’s strategy is deliberately asset-light.

The company wants to secure overlooked acreage early, sharpen the subsurface picture using existing and reprocessed seismic, then bring in larger partners to fund the expensive exploration drilling.

Management says over $50M worth of data already exists across the permits, reducing the need for major upfront acquisition spend.

The next big catalyst is therefore not just another seismic interpretation.

It is the farm-out.

If Tetragon can attract an international oil and gas partner to fund drilling, the company gets a shot at proving a very large resource without carrying the full cost itself.

Asia still wants gas

The macro backdrop is doing Tetragon no harm.

The company is targeting a part of Asia where gas demand remains strong, with Philippine gas pricing of ~US$18/mcf getting highlighted at the recent RIU Good Oil & Gas Energy Conference.

That creates a simple commercial thesis, find large gas close to markets that already want it.

An onshore angle too

Tetragon also owns 100% of SC-82, which hosts the Nassiping-2 gas discovery ~250km from Manila.

Gas was previously recovered to surface, the area has existing well and seismic control, and the project sits near the Luzon power grid.

That gives Tetragon a lower-cost onshore option alongside the much larger offshore prize.

What comes next

The story now turns on execution.

Tetragon needs to keep building the resource picture, progress new leads, add assets where they fit and, most importantly, secure a farm-out partner capable of drilling the big offshore targets.

The acreage is there, the resource numbers are large, now Tetragon has to get a drill bit into the story.
